Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect behind many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the pastel suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
