Throughout his initial presidency, commentators frequently advised that Donald Trump's statements should be taken seriously instead of literally. Yet, real-world experience suggest that that formula could have reversed the logic.

A recently unveiled U.S. National Security Strategy alongside multiple comments from administration officials, presidential allies, and Trump himself have precipitated potentially one of the most severe crises for Atlanticism, the doctrine that has sustained stability and freedom in Europe since World War II.

From Burden-Sharing to Civilizational Fear

While The initial critique centered on Europe's perceived refusal to pay for its own security, his vision has now embraced a significantly more disturbing outlook.

Colored by racism and a deep-seated contempt for Europe's governing bodies and officials, he has issued warnings about the risk of civilizational erosion on a continent he barely knows and has predominantly seen from the interior of a luxury vehicle.

"A lengthy discussion devoid of a consistent philosophy is nevertheless full of something else: the muddled anxiety of an older man facing demographic shifts."

A conspiratorial worldview, which has already influenced contentious American border and law enforcement approaches, is now clearly to be shaping Washington's understanding of Europe.

A Xenophobic Thesis

From this vantage point, immigration from developing nations leads to a cultural dilution of European societies, making them "feeble" under "stupid" leadership and setting the stage for their demise. It constitutes an openly racist theory, with Trump and his circle making clear their support for far-right movements across Europe.

While the broader theme of this race-baiting is not new, its meaning for the continent's defense are essential to grasp.

For Trump and his Maga acolytes—including billionaire Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the breakup of the EU—all politics is fundamentally a deal. However, while he once claimed was about financial fairness, the new claim is that a decadent Europe is fundamentally unworthy due to its embrace of diversity.

Weakening from Within

During the conversation, Trump joins these dots in a form of rhetorical loop. He concedes that the Kremlin wants a divided Europe. Trump then declares Europe is weak, and in exposing the fissures in the transatlantic alliance, he objectively helps Putin by actively undermining European cohesion—all while claiming it's not his "fault".

This dynamic is playing out at perhaps the most consequential moment for Europe in decades, with a brutal conflict in Ukraine and rising Russian-hostile actions across the continent.

As European nations draw closer to Ukraine amid persistent threats of American abandonment, the peril is that Trump has constructed a rationale for ignoring European leaders.

The European Response

These developments demands a robust reaction from capitals across Europe. Although certain figures, including Germany's leader, have been forceful in their pushback, including British officials—have opted for a strategy of attempting to appease the White House.

Recently, the UK government declined to push back on the president's remarks about Europe or his renewed attack on London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

They said, "He has a strong relationship with the U.S. president and a strong relationship with the Mayor of London, and is committed to working with both to achieve stronger results for the people."

The stark reality is that the president intends his words and says what he means consistently. The time has come to abandon the pretense that things are different.
