A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us locate the video.
Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to check the site from which the images originated relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
