The buzz surrounding the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths that are viable with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.

• You might find an answer because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
• Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
