The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about following this lovable family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
