Two Cuba-bound Relief Ships Declared Lost following Departing Mexico.
A comprehensive search and recovery operation is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a pair of unlocated sailboats transporting relief goods traveling from Mexico to Cuba.
Military Search Operations Initiated
The Mexican government has dispatched navy personnel and search planes to locate the missing boats, which were had on board a minimum of nine crew members, as stated by a navy statement.
The vessels had been projected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their docking, the navy said.
The Situation of Relief to the Island
Cuba has relied heavily on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the country endures repeated nationwide blackouts.
"Both skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are equipped with proper safety equipment and emergency beacons," an official associated with the mission said.
The nine crew members are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their consular staff.
"Our team is co-operating fully with the authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.
Previous Relief Mission
Just days before, the government in Havana widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the nation.
That boat, called "a new Granma" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to launch the revolution in the mid-20th century, brought photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, cycles and foodstuffs.
Broader International Context
Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of efforts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, when a energy blockade on the island nation began.
Global bodies have since highlighted ""severe" supply shortages, with in excess of 50k operations called off in Cuba amid power shortages.
Political tensions have been ramped up lately, with remarks from different leaders highlighting the complex state of relations.
Reacting to recent proposals, a prominent official from Cuba declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."
Reports suggest that early stages of discussions commenced, although their present status remains unclear.
The Mexican navy affirmed it was pledged to using every available asset at its reach to find the vessels and ensure the security of the sailors.
As of now, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
